RESEARCH ON WILLIAM RILEY WAKELY'S AND JOHN CLARK BUTLER'S DESCENDANTS,
SIBLINGS, SPOUSES, AND ANCESTORS, FALL 1967 TO PRESENT, RURAL ROUTE 2,
BOX 840, OKMULGEE, OKLAHOMA 74447-9678.
Bertha attended the following schools in the Chandler, Oklahoma area:
She began at Rural, Oak Grove School, District No. 47, located in Union
Township in Section 19, Township 15, North Range 4 East: Enid Goble
taught her. Next, she attended Lone Star School, District No. 86, in
Carney school district. In December 1996, when Preston M. Caudle
interviewed her, Bertha did not remember her teachers' names. Then she
attended Union (Hardscrabble) School, District No. 37, located 6 miles
north and 1 mile west of Chandler. Mr. Linton and Mrs. Combs taught her.
For the 5th grade she attended the "Old" Eastside School in the city of
Chandler. Bertha was not sure about her teacher's name but thought it may
be Ruth Gaymon. It was a two story brick building and still being used as a
cafeteria in 1955. Preston and Kay Wakley Caudle ate there in 1954 and
1955. The building was condemed and torn down after 1955. Bertha
attended Stony Point School, District No. 60, for her 6th or 7th year. It
was located 3 miles nortwest of Chandler on a rocky hill. Dolly Mannings
taught her. For her eighth grade she attended Oak Grove School, District
No. 47, again. Unice Goble, Enid Goble's sister, taught her. For the ninth
grade she attended Carney High School, District No. 105. She did not
remember her teacher's name. For the part of the 9th and all of the
10th grade, she attended Chandler High School. Mr. Davison, Miss Gillian,
and Miss Hendrix taught her.
BERTHA IS TALL AND SLENDER. ONE COULD SAY SHE IS BEAUTIFUL EVEN IN HER
ELDER YEARS. HER EYES ARE CLEAR BLUE AND HER SKIN IS FAIR. SHE DOES NOT
DRINK OR HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH SOMEONE WHO DOES. SHE DOESN'T SMOKE OR
HAVE ANY OTHER BAD HABITS. SHE LIKES WORKING, GOING TO CHURCH, STAYING AT
HOME, COOKING, AND TAKING CARE OF HER FAMILY. SHE WAS SAVED AT A REVIVAL
IN CARNE, OKLAHOMA, WEST OF CHANDLER, IN 1948 OR 49, AND THEN SHE WON HER
FAMILY TO THE LORD INCLUDING HER HUSBAND. SHE IS A LOVING, KIND,
GENEROUS, AND LOYAL PERSON. WHEN PRESTON SR. WAS GOING TO COLLEGE SHE GAVE
HIM MONEY SEVERAL TIMES TO BUY HIS CAR TAG BECAUSE SHE KNEW THAT HE WAS
HAVING A HARD TIME FINANCIALLY. HE ALWAYS PAID HER BACK WHEN HE RECEIVED
HIS NEXT PAYCHECK. SHE PAYS HER BILLS ON TIME AND EXPECTS OTHERS TO DO
THE SAME. SHE ALSO HELPS OTHERS. SHE KEEPS HER INTEGRITY, AND HER
CHARACTER IS ABOVE REPROACH. SHE IS A MORAL PERSON THAT PRACTICES
SELF-CONTROL. SHE READS HER BIBLE EVERY DAY; SHE BELIEVES IT; SHE KNOWS
IT; SHE APPLYS IT; SHE PRAYS CONTINUOUSLY. SHE IS A STRONG, DETERMINED
PERSON. SHE ALSO CAN BE STUBBORN WHEN HER TEMPER FLARES. PRESTON SR.
ALWAYS THOUGHT OF HER AS HIS OTHER MOTHER.
IN NOVEMBER OF 1994 AFTER HER DAUGHTER KAY'S DEATH, SHE SUFFERED FIVE
MINI STROKES. IT HAS IMPAIRED HER TO SOME EXTENT. SHE LOST HER
INDENPENDENCE FOR AWHILE BUT REGAINED IT THROUGH REHABILITATION. SHE
LOST HER CAPABILITY TO DRIVE A CAR BECAUSE SHE CANNOT USE HER RIGHT ARM
VERY WELL. THOUGH SHE OWNS A PONTIAC CAR, IT DOESN'T DO HER ANYGOOD. IT
IS PARKED IN HER GARAGE WITH A DEAD, RUNDOWNED BATTERY. SHE WANTS TO
DRIVE BUT KNOWS SHE CAN'T. IT HURTS HER.
