Notes from J.R. Caudle (Her Brother)
10/16/2011 - Billy called to tell me that Melita wasn't doing well. He said that she had been in the hospital since the past Sunday (9th), when he carried her to the emergency room because her leg was hurting her. He said that the fluid build-up around the liver had moved into her leg and caused an infection. He said that they had been treating that all week, but that she wasn't getting any better.
I called Fred (Her other brother), and he said that he would go down early Monday morning to see her, and let me know what he thinks. His plan was to leave about 4:30 AM Monday morning. But, one of his church members died at 1 AM, and he was at the hospital until about 3:30 AM. He then went home and talked to Kay for a while, then left for North Carolina.
10/17/2011 - Fred arrived around 10:30 AM and called me around lunch time here (Shreveport, LA). He said the same thing Billy had told me. She wasn't doing well. He said she looked really old and tired, (which shocked him) and he didn't think she would last much longer. He stayed with her all day, and left around 5 PM to head back to Maryland.
10/18/2011 - Billy called to say that Melita had been asking about me. She wanted to see me. I had already been in contact with Lianna (her daughter) and left a message for Richard (her son). We were planning on going to see her. I let Billy know this, and that we would be there Thursday afternoon. He sounded concerned that she didn't have much time.
10/19/2011 - Headed across 20 through Dallas and up 35 to 40, and then over to Weatherford, OK to pick up Lianna. We then drove straight through to N.C. on 40. Richard had told Lianna that he couldn't go. On the way to Weatherford, Melita called me on my cell phone and told me to hurry up. She didn't know how long she could hold on.
10/20/2011 - We arrived at the hospital around 6PM N.C. time. Melita was sleeping, so we didn't wake her. We left and went to find a room for the evening, and clean up. We got a room at the Baymont Inn, close to the hospital, and cleaned up. While there, Billy called. We told him we were on our way back up to see her. He was in the room with her, and had woken her up.
We went back up to see her. She thanked us for coming, and talked about how long the drive was. Lianna had a hard time staying in the room. She didn't like seeing her mom like that.
Melita didn't look good. She told me that she hadn't seen Jesus yet. I told her to keep looking, and that she would find him. The nurse came in and gave Melita her pain meds, which put Melita to sleep.
We took Billy to Red Robin right across from the hospital. We got back to the hospital about 9PM. Billy didn't stay long. He told Melita he loved her, and hugged her, and then left about 9:15. We talked to Melita. I told her about picking Lianna up at her house and how nice it was. Melita told Lianna that she wished she could have been there to see it. She told me that she just couldn't go on like this. She said she couldn't live like that. The nurse came in to give her meds again, and Melita was going to sleep, so we hugged her and told her we loved her. She went to sleep, and we left to go get some sleep at 10PM.
10/21/2011 - My cell phone rang at about 3:45AM, and it was the nurse to tell me that Melita had passed on at 3:32AM.
Lianna and I got dressed and drove over to the hospital. We got there before Billy, who had also been called. The nurse came in the room with us as we viewed her body.
The nurse told us that she had woken around 1AM and asked about us and she told her that we had a room at a motel and we were sleeping. She said she would call us, but Melita didn’t want her to wake us. She asked about Billy, and the nurse told her he had gone home to sleep. The nurse called Billy and told him that Melita was awake. He said that he would sleep a little more and then come back up. Melita asked the nurse how close to heaven she was, and the nurse told her that she was as close as she could get. The nurse gave Melita her meds and she went to sleep. At 3:32AM Melita died. Her heart monitor and vitals just stopped.
The nurse called Jones Funeral home for us, and when the hospital coroners came up, we left and stood out in the parking lot while Lianna and Billy smoked. While there, Jones called and said that he would be picking Melita up around 6 AM, and set a 2PM appointment with us. We went back to the room and slept until 9:30AM, and then got up and met Billy at IHOP for breakfast. Then we went to Melita’s bank to try to close her account but the manager told us we would need a Death Certificate and a Court doc. Then we went to Walmart for Lianna.
At 2PM we were at Jones Funeral Home. We made the arrangements, and went back to Billy’s so Lianna could pack up some of Melita’s things to keep for her and Richard.
We ate at Smithfield’s and Billy’s Mom and Sister came over to meet us while we were eating. Afterwards, we went back to Billy’s and finished packing the stuff Lianna wanted to keep. Then, Lianna and I left and got a room at Holiday Inn Express.
10/22/2011 - Woke up Saturday morning, got Duncan Donuts, and drove over to Havelock, N.C. to see where we used to live.
Went out through New Bern, N.C. Drove all the way to the outskirts of Nashville (Lebanon, TN), and stopped for the evening at a Holiday Inn.
10/23/2011 - Woke up and ate at the motel, then drove all the way through to Weatherford, OK, and dropped Lianna off.
Then I drove down to Ardmore, and stayed at a La Quinta Inn. Drove to work the next morning.
10/27/2011 - Forgot and left my suit in the cleaners Tuesday night, so had to stay and get suit first thing Wednesday morning. Had to have Fred pick up Billy at the airport at noon. The girls and I got to Chandler around 2, about the same time Fred got back with Billy. We all met at the Funeral Home in Chandler, OK and viewed Melita’s body, and made final preparation for the service Friday morning.
Afterwards, we walked across to the Florist, and took care of the flowers. Then we drove down to the Stone Yard, and took care of the headstone.
Then, we all went and ate pizza at Ken’s, and headed over to Dina and Russell’s house (Mom's Sister's family). Lori was there to let us in. (Dina and Russell were in Hawaii)
That evening, we went to Shawnee to see “The Big Year” with Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black.
10/28/2011 - Fred preached the sermon for the graveside services, and I sang and played the guitar with Robert backing me on his guitar. Lianna sang a song as well.
After the services, the girls and Fred and I drove over to Okmulgee. Stacey and Peggy cooked for us.
Fred, and I went to see Bam’s high school football team play. Nicole and K.C. went with Stacey to the game. Theresa stayed with Peggy and Earl.
10/29/2011 - Fred, and the girls and I went horseback riding out at Fort Gibson Lake. Dang horse slipped in the coral and I fell off the back of it, hurt my ribs, back and thumb.
Ate at Stacey’s that evening, and then drove to Jeff’s for the night.
10/30/2011 - Fred got up early and left Jeff’s to get to the airport on time for his flight.
The girls and I left around 10 and headed home.

Mom and Dad Cake Cutting.jpg Notes - KAY AND I SPENT OUR FIRST NIGHT TOGETHER AT ADA, OKLAHOMA. EARLIER THAT
DAY, CLIFFORD MOSER AND I WASHED AND WAXED THE CAR. IT DIDN'T DO NO GOOD
THOUGH BECAUSE CLIFFORD, ANNA RITA AND THE REST OF THE KIDS AT THE
RECEPTION PAINTED "JUST MARRIED" ALL OVER THE CAR. (THE SUN BAKED IT INTO
THE PAINT AND WE NEVER DID GET IT OFF THE CAR). CLIFFORD CROSSED THE
SPARK PLUG WIRES AND I MADE HIM CHANGE THEM BACK SINCE HE WAS THE ONLY
MECHANIC THERE. WE ATE AT A RESTAURANT AND THEN WENT TO A CARNIVAL
OUTSIDE OF ADA.
I TRIED TO WIN KAY A TEDDY BEAR BUT NEVER GOT THE JOB DONE. AFTER ABOUT 2
HOURS OF IT, WE WENT TO THE MOTEL WE HAD RENTED EARLIER THAT DAY. WE ATTEMPTED
TO DRINK THE WINE I HAD BROUGHT HOME FROM MY BACHELOR PARTY FOR OUR WEDDING
NIGHT. BUT WE FOUND THAT MOM HAD TAMPERED WITH IT. SHE HAD POURED HALF OF IT
OUT AND ADDED WATER. IT TASTED WEAK SO WE EMPTIED IT OUT IN THE BATHROOM SINK.
MY WIFE AND I VISITED ADA IN 1983 AND LOOKED FOR THE MOTEL WE STAYED IN. WE
FOUND IT BUT IT WAS BEING DEMOLISHED. THE CABIN WE STAYED IN HAD ALREADY BEEN
TORN DOWN.
THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY NIGHT WE CAUGHT THE BUS TO RETURN TO WHIDBEY ISLAND,
OAK HARBOR, WASHINGTON, MY NAVAL DUTY STATION AT THAT TIME. AFTER THREE NIGHTS
ON THE BUS, WE SPENT FRIDAY NIGHT IN A HOTEL AT MT. VERNON, WASHINGTON.
THERE, WE CONSUMATED OUR MARRIAGE.
