CITY MECHANIC RETIRES AFTER 42 YEARS
IN 1926 A YOUNG CHANDLER MAN STARTED TO WORK AT THE OVERLAND WHIPPETT
CAR AGENCY, LOCATED AT 710 MANVEL AVENUE, AS A GENERAL MECHANIC. SATURDAY,
SEPTEMBER 7, WALTER H. HUBBARD, CLEANED HIS WRENCHES AND TOOLS FOR THE
LAST TIME AND RETIRED AFTER SERVING LINCOLN COUNTY AUTOMOBILE OWNERS FOR
42 YEARS.
HUBBARD'S FORTY-TWO YEARS AS A MECHANIC HAS SEEN MANY CHANGES
IN THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY. IN HIS EARLY YEARS HE WORKED ON THE OLD
MODEL T's, MODEL A's, MAXWELLS, STAR CARS, OVERLANDS, AND JEWETT's. MOST
OF THESE CARS HAD 4 AND 6 CYLINDER MOTORS THAT NEEDED THE GENTLE TOUCH OF
A GOOD MECHANIC NOW AND THEN. HUBBARD REMEMBERS WORKING ON A 1920 MODEL
OLDSMOBILE, V-8 MOTOR, NO LESS, WHICH WAS USED BY THE OLD EGBERT HOTEL AS
A SHUTTLE BUS FROM THE CHANDLER RAILWAY DEPOT TO THE HOTEL.
HE WAS BORN IN APRIL, 1906, TWO MILES SOUTH OF CHANDLER, TO CHESTER
JOSEPH AND PEARL C. COX HUBBARD. HE WENT TO SCHOOL AT RED OAK SCHOOL
UNTIL THE FAMILY MOVED TO MAJOR COUNTY IN WESTERN OKLAHOMA IN 1918. IN
1925 HE RETURNED TO CHANDLER AND GOT STARTED WORKING ON CARS BY DOING
MOST OF THE REPAIR ON HIS OWN CAR, A 1921 MODEL T. HE WAS MARRIED TO INA
MAE RIKARD IN 1929 AND THEY HAVE TWO CHILDREN, DORIS McDANIELS, SAPULPA,
OKLA., AND CHESTER R. HUBBARD OF OKLAHOMA CITY.
HUBBARD TRIED EARLY DAY STOCK CAR RACING AS A SPORT IN 1932. HE
BUILT UP A 1929 MODEL A AND RACED AT CUSHING AND PAWHUSKA ON OLD RACE
TRACKS THAT WERE OVAL SHAPED AND ABOUT 3/4 MILE IN LENGTH. FINALLY, ONE
RACE AT PAWHUSKA ENDED IN A WRECK IN WHICH THE DRIVER OF HIS CAR WAS
KILLED. TOP SPEED OF THE RACER WAS ABOUT 70 MPH BY THE CLOCK.
HUBBARD LEFT THE OVERLAND-WHIPPETT AGENCY IN 1930 AND WENT TO WORK
AT THE FORD GARAGE AND WAS THERE UNTIL 1939. IN JANUARY OF THAT YEAR HE
STARTED TO WORK IN A SHOP BEHIND GINN AUTO SUPPLY AND WAS THERE UNTIL HIS
RETIREMENT. SATURDAY, SEPT. 7 THRU SEPT. 14 MARKED HIS FIRST WEEKS
VACATION SINCE 1939. HE HAS A RECORD OF 4 DAYS OFF WORK IN 42 YEARS.
HUBBARD SAYS THAT CARS GIVE BETTER SERVICE TODAY THAN THEY DID IN
THE PAST. BROKEN SPRINGS SEEMED TO BE A COMMON AILMENT OF MOST
AUTOMOBILES, BUT NOW THEY HARDLY EVER BREAK. SINCE ROADS ARE BETTER NOW
AND SO ARE THE CARS. THE OLD CARS WOULD HARDLY EVER RUN OVER 50,000
MILES AND NOW THEY GO UP TO 130,000 MILES IN THE LIFE OF AN AUTOMOBILE.
THE MOST UNUSUAL AUTOMOBILE THAT HE WORKED ON WAS A 1950 DODGE THAT HAD
OVER 130,000 MILES ON THE MOTOR WITH NOTHING BUT MINOR PARTS REPLACED.
HUBBARD SAID THAT ALL OF HIS KNOWLEDGE CAME FROM PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND
READING BOOKS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A TWO WEEK SCHOOL ON AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSIONS.
THE ONLY INJURIES HE SUSTAINED IN HIS CAREER WAS A BROKEN FOOT IN
1943, ON WHICH HE "DROPPED A MOTOR ON IT DUE TO MY FOOLISHNESS."
HUBBARD BELIEVES THAT THE OLD STYLE MECHANICS ARE DYING OUT AND SOON
WILL HAVE SERVICE CENTERS OR VERY LARGE GARAGES THAT WILL DO ALL THE
REPAIR WORK. THERE IS STILL A GOOD LIVING TO BE MADE AS AN INDEPENDENT
MECHANIC, BUT IT IS NOT A CHOICE CAREER FOR A YOUNG MAN, HE SAID.
