On 20 March 1996 Carmen Rodriguez Betancourt - Adams wrote, "'My
grandpa and grandma migrated to the United States in 1910. With them
came her dad, and eldest son. My mother was born on the way but still in
Mexico. As far as I can remember, she said they first lived in Anaheim.
Grandpa got a job with the railroad laying track. Later on they moved to
Verdemont, which is about 15 miles northwest of San Bernardino and south
of Cajon Pass. Cajon Pass is the gateway to the high desert. There in
Verdemont they lived on a ranch owned by the Meyers family. The Meyers
were one of the first families in this area and there are still some of
them around. Later on, they moved to San Bernardino to a house on "L"
street. My youngest Uncle who is now 75 years old was born there. His
name is Antonio Lopez Sanchez. They lived there for a while and then
moved to "J" street. The house is still there, and as a matter of fact,
my Uncle Tony lives there with his wife named Sally. I would like for
you to meet them when you come visit me in June; you'll like them and I'm
sure they will like you too.'
'I had mentioned to you that my Mother and 2 Aunts, an Uncle,
grandpa, and great-grandpa all died within a few years of each other
fron TB. I think they may have contracted something called 'Valley
Fever.' Valley Fever is caused by a virus that comes from the soil where
horses and cattle are kept. The symtoms are the same as TB and the
treatment is the same. I mentioned this to my doctor years ago and she
agreed that back during those times they misdiagnosed alot of illnesses.
A few years ago there was a Rock Concert held in that area. I think they
were trying to duplicate 'Woodstock' on a smaller scale. Some of the
concert goers got sick with 'Valley Fever.' Also, not all the family
caught this so it makes me think that those that didn't get sick were not
exposed to the soil as much."
